What is considered a "Drug Free Workplace?"
It is a work environment where all employees abide to policies and/or programs designed
to provide a safe workplace by discouraging alcohol and drug abuse. Encourage for
treatment, recovery and the return to work of those employees with such abuse
problems is also established.
Why Should An Employer Establish a Drug Free Workplace
Program?
Currently research shows that almost 75% of illicit drug users (not
including alcohol) are employed in full and part-time jobs. That means on a daily basis over 40,000 Americans
are going to work while under the influence of illicit drugs. How does this translate to the employer? For the typical employer this could mean; unhealthy
employees, unsafe working conditions, loss of productivity, smaller profits,
more accidents, and higher medical claims expenses just to name a few.
Small and medium-sized companies (less than 25 employees) have a 60% greater chance to employ illicit drug users, while at the same time 80% of those companies do not have drug testing polices/programs in place. The reason for this trend is simple…..illicit drug users search for employment where drug testing programs are not in place. It is suggested increased healthcare costs and decreased productivity due to alcohol and other substance abuse costs companies $1,000 each year per employee!
There is hope because small businesses have the power to improve the safety, health of their workplaces and employees. Implementing drug-free workplace programs that can educate employees about the dangers of drug abuse and encourage individuals with related problems to seek the necessary help.
A Drug-free workplace can:
· Reduce claims and medical insurance costs over time
· Reduce the cost of workers’ compensation insurance
· Minimize theft and damage to equipment
· Increase employee productivity
· Increase trust and confidence among your employees
· Create a safer work place
